Every home accumulates dust. Allergies to dust can trigger asthma symptoms, such as wheezing or coughing, or other allergies, such as atopic dermatitis, which causes a rash, or seasonal allergies that cause stuffy noses. One of the main allergens found in homes are dust mites. This blog post covers how you can use ozone for dust mites removal. Continue reading to learn more…
The dust mites can be found anywhere in your home, including your carpet, bed, couch, and cupboards. Our pets’ dander and dead skin cells provide the nourishment they thrive on. Even if you take precautions to prevent them, your home is vulnerable to dust mites.
The dust mites pose a great deal of environmental damage. So what is the solution to get rid of this issue? The answer is ozone! Yes, ozone generators eliminate and control these harmful organisms. Depending on your allergies, controlling and killing dust mites can be essential for people who are highly allergic to dust mite droppings, which can result in asthma and other allergic symptoms.
Setting the ozone generator unit as close to your air ducts as possible is the best way to kill dust mites in your home. If you are using your air conditioner, be sure to turn them on during the treatment period so that there is good circulation. You can increase the chances of the ozone levels reaching every room in the house by keeping your air ducts open throughout. This will also allow the generator to eliminate more dust mites than you would think.
If you and your family are going to school, work, or wherever else during the day, you should leave the generator running for few minutes when the space is empty. Throughout the entire treatment cycle, leave all cabinets, cupboards, closets, drawers, etc. open. By doing this, you will not have dust mites in your home, and you will also have the best possible air quality.
What Is An Ozone Generator?
The on-demand gas ozone is produced by ozone generators to deodorize the air in residential or commercial areas. It consists of three oxygen molecules and is the main component of the ozone layer. Detaching and reattaching this third molecule quickly changes its properties. It will deodorize the air from the required area.
Air cleaning devices don’t commonly use the term ozone generator. An ozone generator’s function can be understood by first understanding what ozone is.
The gas ozone consists of three oxygen atoms and is highly reactive. Ozone’s molecular structure is unstable, unlike that of oxygen (2 oxygen atoms), which is a stable molecule.
In the upper layers of the atmosphere, you can find ozone in its natural state. Earth’s surface is protected by it from harmful UV rays that cause skin cancer.
Ozone is used commercially in a variety of applications, including water and air purification, and aquaculture.
The ozone generator produces ozone and emits it into the atmosphere. Sometimes it is marketed as an ‘air sterilizer or an ‘O3 ionizer’.
Is Ozone Safe?
In spite of the protection ozone provides against UV rays and its many commercial applications, high amounts of ozone can cause adverse health effects.
Inhaled ozone damages the respiratory system, causing the following symptoms:
- breathing difficulty
- coughing
- shortness of breath.
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchitis.
Therefore, you must carefully use ozone machine by following the instructions provided by manufacturer.
Does It Kill Dust Mites?
To determine if ozone affects dust mite mortality, researchers at the University of Wonju in Korea conducted a study. During the study, it was shown that dust mites die at a high concentration of ozone. Thus, dust mites are killed by an ozone generator if the air is suffused with enough ozone.
There is, however, the question of whether the high dose is considered safe for humans. This is why it is important to leave the treatment area. The dust mite is not what makes people allergic to dust mites, but their droppings. There is a problem with dust mite allergies all year round.
A dry, well-ventilated home is best. The dust mite thrives in conditions where there is greater than 50% humidity, but does not thrive in a dry environment. Maintain a humidity level below 50%. The humidity level may not be easily controlled during some seasons or in certain climates. Make sure not to keep plants or fish tanks in the bedroom because they contribute to humidity.
Dust mites cannot be picked up by dry vacuuming. For the best results, steam clean your carpet with ozone spray.
Bed linens, including pillowcases and mattress covers, should be washed in hot water every one to two weeks [130 degrees Fahrenheit (54.5 degrees Celsius). The high temperatures also help to dry the bedding.
When you cover your mattress, box spring, and pillows with allergen-proof covers, you can reduce your contact with dust mites. A whole-home approach to reducing allergens is best with this. The use of mattress covers and pillowcases is not sufficient without some of the other methods listed above.
Other than these tips, the ideal and long term solution is using an ozone machine. As many experts consider ozone generators to be effective at killing dust mites, you may want to buy one for your carpeting and furniture.
Bottom Line
The dust mites are too small for your eyes to see. The mites can be found on bedding, upholstered furniture, mattresses, carpets, and curtains. Allergic reactions and asthma attacks are often caused by dust mites. It is important that you use an ozone generator to prevent allergens in your bedrooms as adults spend one-third of their time there and children most of their time indoors.
