Because of the widespread of COVID-19, many environments now require machines and equipment to purify the air, disinfect and sterilize. They are mainly divided into ultraviolet lamps and ozone generators. They all have the effect of air disinfection and sterilization, which one is the better choice?

The principle of UV sterilization

UV is to destroy and change the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) structure of microorganisms through ultraviolet radiation so that the bacteria die immediately or cannot reproduce their offspring to achieve the purpose of sterilization. The real bactericidal effect is UVC ultraviolet rays because the C-band ultraviolet rays are easily absorbed by the biological DNA, especially the ultraviolet rays around 253.7nm.

Advantages: UV sterilization is a purely physical disinfection method. It has the advantages of simple and convenient, broad-spectrum and high-efficiency, no secondary pollution, easy management, and automation. With the introduction of various new-designed ultraviolet lamps, the application range of ultraviolet sterilization is also Constantly expanding.

Disadvantages: People and animals should not be in the room when the ultraviolet lamp is disinfected, because ultraviolet rays are harmful to the skin and the eyes. The penetrating ability is weak, and the disinfection effect is not good in the place where the ultraviolet rays are not irradiated. Its sterilization ability decreases with the increase of the use time. At the same time, humidity has a great influence on the sterilization effect. In addition, the UV lamp has a short life span, frequent replacement, high operating costs, and insufficient performance.

The principle of ozone sterilization

The ozone generator uses the principle of high-voltage discharge to realize the process of converting oxygen into ozone. That is, high-voltage alternating current is applied to high-voltage electrodes with an insulator in the middle and a certain gap. Let the passing dry purified air or oxygen pass through. When the high-voltage alternating current reaches 10-15KV, a purple glow discharge [corona] is generated to excite oxygen molecules or atoms in the air or oxygen into ozone.

Advantages: Ozone is a gas disinfectant, which can kill bacterial propagules and spores, viruses, fungi, etc., and can destroy botulinum, with strong sterilization ability. The broad spectrum is suitable for a variety of pathogenic microorganisms, and it has a good killing effect on many microorganisms such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, hepatitis A and B virus, and fungi. Ozone sterilization is the use of ozone generated in oxygen, and after the action, it is automatically reduced to oxygen, and it is quickly and naturally decomposed into oxygen. It is economical and safe, and there is no secondary pollution.

Disadvantages: People and animals cannot be in the space during use, because when people are in an ozone-containing environment for a long time, it is harmful to the human body. The time for ozone decomposition is generally 30-60 minutes. After use, you need to wait 30- Can enter the room to work after 60 minutes.

The two can replace each other to a certain extent, but some places are not suitable for writing.
For example, it can be used in a family, hotel room, or both. If it is used in supermarkets, restaurants, warehouses, and other environments, ozone can go deep into corners without being restricted by lights, and the effect of use can be better.
