During storage, incubation, and breeding of healthy chickens, ozone is used to disinfect air and water, and treat the environment. Due to its effectiveness as an oxidant, ozone generator in poultry is mostly used for processing, storing, and transporting poultry and meat. In poultry farms, this water is used for drinking, for washing and sterilizing farm equipment, as well as for deodorizing the air and for killing bacteria, viruses, and pathogens.
The poultry industry is always looking for new and better ways to keep birds, equipment, and facilities free of harmful bacteria. To protect consumers from bacteria, microbiological disinfection is essential due to the wide variety of poultry products. Its capability to be used in gaseous and aqueous media, as well as at the majority of stages in the poultry lifecycle and during processing, makes it a better disinfectant when compared to other disinfectants.
Ozone – Air treatment
It improves the working conditions for the birds and the staff working in poultry houses by oxidizing ammoniacal gases, methane, and carbon dioxide.
In comparison to other air disinfection methods, such as chemical fogging and ultraviolet light, ozone is more effective.
Using ozone generator in poultry, bacteria is reduced and therefore infection and viruses are reduced, which results in increased health and even weight by up to 18%. Their skin color is improved by ozone application.
Unlike formaldehyde, ozone disinfects poultry sheds more effectively and does not require the sheds to be evacuated during a dormant period. The shed is immediately ventilated after it is disinfected with ozone at high concentrations, allowing the birds and staff to occupy it safely. Ozone is not carcinogenic, in contrast to formaldehyde.
In ozonized conditions, hatching hens lay more eggs and their eggshells have a stronger consistency, thanks to the decrease in pathogens and the prevention of toxic buildup of disinfectants. As an alternative to chemicals that cause a toxic build-up on eggshell surfaces and weaken the birds’ immune systems, ozone is used in incubation rooms and chambers.
Ozone in Drinking Water
Using ozonated water can enhance water consumption, raise livestock, and reduce illnesses and deaths. Bacteria and viruses are destroyed by dissolved ozone in cold water. A thermal energy or chemical process is not required, so no residuals are left behind. Minerals can also be removed from water by oxidizing them with ozone. A number of producers have saved money by using ozone to improve the air quality inside facilities. By improving air quality, pathogens and bacteria are reduced or eliminated, and poultry pets are kept healthier. Furthermore, it contributes to the improvement of their quality of living.
Poultry need to drink water as part of their diet. Birds normally consume about twice as much food as they do in weight-based conditions
If the water quality is poor, growth will be slowed, eggs will be produced less efficiently, and the quality will be worse.
Sulfates and copper concentrations in the water have been shown to positively correlate with feed conversion, and ozone can effectively oxidize them and can easily be removed by filtration.
Benefits of Ozone for Water
Waterborne pathogens are reduced, and development of resistance is prevented by this method
- It accelerates the birds’ weight gain
- It increases layer output by improving feed conversion
- It helps the birds to handle heat better by increasing the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the water
- Washing poultry carcasses, equipment, and storing frozen meat using ozone treatment.
- The use of ozonated water as an effective disinfectant does not result in a loss of color or flavor in poultry carcasses
Ozonated water kills Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli cells instantly, along with Candida albicans and Oligosaccharide’s bacilli, at rates of more than 5 log units.
It has been demonstrated that Staphylococcus colonies on machine parts in poultry processing plants. These organisms are resistant to normal cleaning and disinfection strategies, including chlorine. Because of that property, ozone can kill and destroy these organisms.
When poultry is stored in the refrigerator, ozone has a pronounced effect on the flora that causes deterioration, and therefore increases the shelf life!
Ozone for Foodborne Microorganisms
Foodborne microorganisms that affect poultry can be eliminated by ozone in a safe and effective manner. The germicidal power of ozone is 3000 times greater than that of chlorine.
It provides safer food that will last longer, as well as protection against a wider range of pathogens.
Ozone has long been used for commercial deodorization and water disinfection, and in 2001 the FDA and USDA gave it GRAS approval. Ozone can be used directly as an antimicrobial agent for direct contact with food under this GRAS approval. OSHA, NAP, and EPA have also approved this product.
When poultry is treated with ozonated water in the initial and subsequent process, salmonella, campylobacter, Escherichia coli 0157:H7 STECs, and listeria on products and equipment are destroyed, as are odor-causing contaminants. In contrast to peracetic acid and chlorine, ozone does not add harmful chemicals to food, food processing water, or air where food is being stored. Oxygen is returned to ozone following oxidation. Chemical residues are not left behind in the wastewater which will alter the taste of the poultry or cause environmental problems.
Are There Other Benefits for Poultry Sanitation?
In addition to disinfecting a wide range of bacteria and viruses, and leaving no harmful chemical residue, ozone in poultry processing has the following benefits:
- Waste disposal costs are reduced by ozone
- In comparison with ongoing chemical costs, ozone is more cost-effective long-term
- Chemical storage and logistics are eliminated by ozone
- The final rinse with Ozone is not required
- Ozone reduces the amount of time it takes to clean
- The BOD/COD of wastewater can be reduced by ozone treatment
- Energy and water efficiency are improved by ozone
